If you are a computer consultant, or other technology consultant, Caleb has something to say specifically for you:
I still remember in the early 1980’s when my parents would have company over at our house when I was a child. I’d be down in the basement, pounding away on the keyboard of my Texas Instruments TI-99 computer, writing programs in BASIC. They would look to my parents with a worried look and say “When he grows up, who is possibly going to pay that kid money to play with a computer?” Ah. Prophetic words aren’t they?
Several years later, I was working in a large company. I had an interesting discussion with my supervisor. It went something like this:
Me: “If I worked 80 hours next week instead of my normal 40, and I could show to your satisfaction that I indeed was really working those extra 40 hours, and the company was benefiting from them, could you pay me double for my work next week?”
Supervisor: “No. Of course not.”
Me: “Why?”
Supervisor: “Because. You’re on salary.”
Me: “So what? You can change that. You’re the boss. What if I got your manager to sign off on it?.”
Supervisor: “No.”
Me: “Why not?”
Supervisor: “Because then your co-workers would get jealous as all get out! Can you imagine? We’d have a real problem.”
Me: “Why? Just offer them the same deal. Work double. Get paid double. Some will do it. Some won’t. Doesn’t matter. The company benefits, they benefit. It’s a win/win deal.”
Supervisor: <shaking his head, eyes rolled to the ceiling> “Caleb, great. Get back to your cubicle.”
Long story short, I quickly learned that salaried existence was not the life for me. I made plans to start my own business. I worriedly noticed, however, that many of my techie co-workers had, at one point or another, tried to start their own tech businesses and failed, only to go back to salaried corporate life within six months or so.
I stared my technology consulting business from scratch. Within eight months I replaced my old salaried income (which wasn’t too shabby, by the way). Within three years, I was making over $100,000 annually, and was able to hit my ten-year goal of having a six-figure income by the time I was twenty-eight years old. Moreover, I did that working less than 40 hours per week during most weeks.
With the experience I have now, I look back on those three years and sigh at how much more money I could have made in even less time.
I have written a book that goes through exactly what I did to go from zero income to six figures in three years, using computer consulting as the vehicle. There is more information in this book than I had access to myself during that three year period. I offer it to any one who is thinking about becoming a computer consultant, or who wants to take their own computer consulting to the next level. It is available as a downloaded PDF e-book, but printed copies are available for those who wish to pay more.
I am currently working on a slew of more advanced manuals and audio programs designed to help technology consultants raise their incomes and lower their work hours. I am filling them with all of the real-world techniques I have used myself with great positive effect over the last several years. Stay tuned.
